Zinzendorf Stele

Located at the corner of Via Nazionale and Via dei Salici, the Zinzendorf Stele is a monument erected in 1780 to celebrate the opening of the “Via Zinzendorfiana”, an important trade route connecting Trieste to the plateau and, more generally, to the Viennese hinterland.

Over the years, the stele has undergone numerous relocations: damaged by a vehicle, removed for the construction of a roundabout and temporarily stored elsewhere. After a long civil battle for its return, in 2018 it was restored and returned to its original location, where it now once again dominates the historic streets of Opicina.

A small but precious symbol of history, identity and civic tenacity, the Zinzendorf Stele resumes its role as guardian of Opicina's memory, a discreet but ever-present witness to the transformations and ambitions of Trieste.
