“When it blows, it makes this street harder to cross than any other, and that is why it was given the name Bora, which comes naturally to it.” So wrote Antonio Tribel in 1884. See for yourself if it still feels that way.

The Bora sweeps across the canal sideways. More than anywhere else, hold on to your hat! For an even more immersive experience, cross the “Joyce Passage,” better known as the “Short Bridge.”

Piazza della Borsa, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Piazza Dalmazia, Piazza Oberdan, Piazza Goldoni, plus Largo Barriera Vecchia, Piazza Garibaldi, Campo San Giacomo, and Piazza Puecher… each becomes a stage for the Bora’s show. And everyone passing through plays a part.

“There is a destination for the winter wind: the sound of the sea.”

So goes a Japanese haiku. The sea is also the final stage for the Bora, which dives into the Gulf of Trieste after speeding down from the Karst plateau toward the Adriatic. Especially striking are the fan-shaped patterns the gusts draw on the water’s surface – pure visual poetry.

It is one of the city’s most beloved landmarks. Opened in 1902, this unique mode of transport – the only one of its kind in Europe thanks to its rack-and-pinion system – connects the centre of Trieste with the Karst plateau, offering passengers spectacular views of the gulf. More than just a journey, it is an experience that combines history, landscape and tradition.

The connection with the Opicina Tram is temporarily suspended and is expected to resume in June 2026.

Located at the corner of Via Nazionale and Via dei Salici, the Zinzendorf Stele is a monument erected in 1780 to celebrate the opening of the “Via Zinzendorfiana”, an important trade route connecting Trieste to the plateau and, more generally, to the Viennese hinterland.

Measuring temperature, wind speed, and collecting weather data day after day, year after year, is essential to understand the climate of a place and how it changes over time. That’s why we are excited to announce two new weather stations: one on the roof of the Borarium in Opicina, and the other at the Bora Saddle – the windiest spot in the Trieste area, where not only the Bora but also the local breezes are at their strongest.

We can’t wait to see if the Bora at the Saddle will reach 200 km/h – or close to it!

The Borarium is Trieste’s brand-new museum space dedicated to experiencing the Bora through engaging interactive stations for visitors of all ages. Explanations, facts, curiosities, games – and memories! Because no one knows the Bora better than those who live with it.
It is the natural evolution of the Bora Museum project, launched in 1999 and constantly growing. This new space joins the historic “Magazzino dei Venti” in Via Belpoggio 9, the original home of the wind museum, which over the years has sparked curiosity among both visitors and the media.

The city’s most iconic square is as vast as the sea. With the Bora, this “sea” turns restless, and anyone crossing it becomes the hero of a minute-long voyage that feels like an ocean. Caution: when the Bora blows from the Regional Palace toward the waterfront, it’s even fiercer!
